Our February Developer Spotlight shines on Vicente J. Ruiz Jurado who has been working on a couple of projects for Google Wave:

Troco, and

Karma

Both of these extensions have a social overtone to them and are quite ingenious and certainly not what you normally see being done by developers.

Let’s first look at Troco (which I could only access on the Google Wave Developer Sandbox and not the “September 09″ released Google Wave Preview):

Vicente explains that Troco means barter in Interlingua and in Português. Also, troc means barter in French and Català. He explains that Troco is:

An experimental peer-to-peer currency system. Troco is a set of wave extensions that aims to provide a decentralized complementary community currency system, i.e., a peer-to-peer currency system. You can also view it as an IOU or promissory note based system. At the current point, troco consists only in an experimental (unfinished and insecure) Wave gadget with a toolbar installer. For more info visit:http://troco.ourproject.org

Vicente also offers, a quote from Complementary Currencies in Japan Today, 2004 to help explain why this extension will become useful:

«Japan isn’t dealing with a “Japanese crisis” as is typically described in the Western media, but rather with a structural world crisis that chronologically happens to have first hit Japan.(…) We can expect the US to follow a similar path of denial particularly in an election year, repeating the mantra that the Japanese have heard for fourteen years: “next year, the economy will be back to normal.” It is under this light that what is going on in Japan in the domain of complementary currencies is relevant for the rest of the world. The second largest economy of the world has turned itself into a real-life laboratory for resolving a variety of economic and social problems from the bottom up, thanks to monetary innovations. Can the rest of the world afford not to learn from those experiments?»

Thus, Troco is heavily inspired in the japanese WAT and i-WAT Systems.

Given the Global economic crisis Troco’s time may indeed have arrivied. But first Vicente has some work to still do on the extension to get it working properly:

A brief of things to work on / study:

Make the gadget more robust

Improve the use of FireGPG (advanced users)

Study the implementation of debt circulation

Study the evolution of wave and how can this improve this project

We wish him good luck! I for one certainly hope he gets both this extension and the underlying idea surrounding Troco into the mainstream. It is more than time for new ideas when it comes to our barter system (or….is that what got is into this problem in the first place).

Next is Karma. Vicente describes Karma as:

Karma adds a simple rating Gadget to Waves, allowing participants of a Wave to rate each other. It also allows the expulsion and prohibition of users that have a low Karma from the Wave.i.e. if a user has been rated repeatedly with a low Karma and tries to enter a Wave with the checkbox “Kick out low-Karma participants” activated, the user will not be allowed to enter the Wave. Note: The kickout function is implemented, but will not work until remove_participant operation is in the API.

If you want to see Karma in action check out the demo Wave, which is available in the Google Wave Preview Edition.

Vicente goes on to add:

In the background, the overall Karma of Wave users is calculated using the Trust Metric algorithm from www.advogato.org.

If you want to use Karma, just add karma-bot@appspot.com to a Wave, and rate other participants. The more participants rate each other, the more accurate the global rate calculation becomes.

Short-term

Improve interface to be able to support Waves with a lot of participants.

Add a button to remove a rating.

Middle/Long term

Study, choose and integrate a distributed reputation algorithm instead of the centralized algorithm.

Again, another great extension that is very interesting in terms of applying meaning to your social Karma rating. Not sure how popular that would be, but I certainly think that some of the underlying technology and thinking regarding the Karma extension could have some applicability in Black-Listing undesirable users who are intent on malicious actions. See the Google Wave User Black List post for more on that subject.

So hats off to Vicente! You are doing great work and I hope you continue to develop for Google Wave. Your work is both original and meaningful! Congradulations on being choosen for our February Developer Spotlight.

Please share your thoughts and encouragement for Vicente by leaving a comment below. We love to hear from you and your thoughts on this any post. What do you think of Vicente’s extension? Pretty cool, eh?

Google’s Campfire One is a series of sessions where they invite certain developers to their campus to talk about their ideas and news surrounding their developments. A few nights ago they had the Google Web Tookit 2.0 developers on hand.

Google Web Tookit 2.0 is the development kit offered by Google for building and optimizing complex browser-based applications. GWT is used by many products at Google, including Google Wave and Google AdWords. It’s open source, completely free, and used by thousands of developers around the world.

At Google’s Campfire One the developers unveiled the Google Web Tookit 2.0:

After a year and a half of working with teams like Google Wave, AdWords, and Orkut (as well as many others inside and outside of Google), Google Web Toolkit 2.0 has emerged with new tools in its toolkit and more features in its core SDK to meet the demands of today’s web applications.

The video below is from Google’s Campfire One and shows the developers showcasing their new product (it is actually a series of 6 videos, just like being at the real thing):

Two of the big improvements they made in Google Web Tookit 2.0 is:

Faster Apps

Google Web Toolkit now offers a new tool called Speed Tracer, a performance profiler for Google Chrome that allows developers to see what’s going on in a whole new way by enabling diagnosis of hidden problems. Developer-guided code splitting is another new feature that allows developers to split up their application into multiple pieces for much faster startup times. Users download only the JavaScript they need to get started while the rest can be loaded at a later time.

Faster Development

Google Web Toolkit 2.0 also introduces UiBinder, a Declarative UI framework that enables rapid design iteration and a clean separation between presentation layer and application logic. Team projects will benefit from an improved workflow that provides smooth collaboration between designers and developers.

Here is the Speed Tracer Tutorial:

These updates will be well received by Google Wave developers. I think the UiBinder will be a big hit among all developers. If you are not too familiar with GWT but want to be check out some of the GWT Books to help you get started.

Love to hear thoughts from the developers on what they think of the latest update to the GWT.

You won’t find any cut & paste posts on these sites or re-hashing or re-wording of similar stories that you have seen everywhere else. To the contrary, these sites are based on hands-on observations experienced by the developer with Google Wave.

So let’s get right to the list (in no particular order):

“On the top of the Wave“ – is a blog to inform, discuss and learn everything related to Google Wave. It is offered in both English and Spanish. It was created by the Kiwibcn team so they could share their knowledge and experience on creating themes, widgets and other wave-related stuff.

This is an excellent site that offers in-depth analysis on aspects of Google Wave that I don’t think you find anywhere else. In fact everything they write is based on their experience with Google Wave. Moreover, if you speak Spanish you should consider this site your primary Google Wave resource.

“Mastering Wave“ – is another bog site. They state their aim as envisioning all users enjoying their Internet journey with Google Wave!! I think we could agree that is a noble aim indeed. What they offer is a very insightful blog post related to their hands-on developmental efforts with Google Wave. They also give a weekly wrap-up of interesting stuff on the web regarding Google Wave. Great site that I visit daily and really enjoy.

“Blog of Small Things“ – is a blog, as described by the author, as a site about WordPress, WordPress themes, WordPress Hosting, Books, and more Web 2.0 stuff that I love. One of the Web 2.0 stuff he loves is Google Wave. So, along with WordPress info, I also get some interesting Web 2.0 information along with a healthy dose of Google Wave information. Great site and the author posts some really insightful information that you will surely appreciate.

“Waving The Shiny“ – is a site that has a grand vision. The entire purpose for this site is to both explore the possibilities of the Wave ideal and get into the guts of the system as it is presented by both Google’s “Official” Wave Service, and the WRS. So it’s going to have the following:

Three (3) blog sites and two(2) forums, one for Spanish and one for primarily German (but it seems to support other languages) folks. Hopefully you will find these as interesting as I did.

The following post falls into a category that I hope I’ll be doing many more of a similar type. I want to highlight a specific developer. Moreover, I want to highlight a developer that has shared their efforts with us here in our forums. So the idea behind the “Developer Spotlight” is that it highlights the efforts of developers that have joined our forums and contributed to the forums. Thus, making the forums a much more rich and enjoyable experience for all.

So, our first developers to be highlighted in the Developer Spotlight is the folks at waveDOTto.

Their development efforts in Google Wave include the following:

At present there are a few robots and gadgets and a test desktop client for the fedone reference server…

Robots
hangman- http://wave.to/robots/hangman lets you play hangman
Rssybot (new!) – http://wave.to/robots/rssybot allows you to turn wave into an rss reader
Wave Live Messenger (new!) – http://www.wave.to/robots/wavelivemessenger/ chat to your messenger contacts through wave!
Starify – http://wave.to/robots/starifybot/ allows you to star waves
Gadgets
floodit - http://www.wave.to/gadgets/floodit/ simple game… could keep you occupied for hours…?
hangman - http://www.wave.to/gadgets/hangman/ lets you play hangman.
Let’s start with the Rssbot. First check out this video of the bot in action:

You can see how this takes having an RSS Feed on your site to a whole new level. If you want to read something from the headlines folks don’t have to leave your site. They can read the feed article that interests them and then continue surfing your (not leaving your) site.

You could see how we are really going to have to think about how web-sites get built. You could just have a collection of Waves that you pick and choose to make up the pieces of what is thought of as a website. Surfing the web would become surfing the waves.

Starify is a neat little robot that adds the ability to “star” waves similar to how you would “star” messages in Gmail.

Wave Live Messenger is very cool. You gotta see this video:

So how could this possibly be used. I mean it pretty much just takes your Messenger and puts it in a Wave. Well that alone is a good thing. So as I said above your online experience could just be a collection of waves that you use and surf the net with. What I am getting at here is that you don’t require to have another application up and running. Just you web browser. One app that does what many other apps use to do. One app only using and drawing on the memory required for that app. That frees up a lot for your computer to do other things. Not to mention it is just very cool!

Next, I would like to say a few words on iWave. First, lets watch the video:

So this is a social media junkies dream wave. Integration with your Facebook profile. Good, but what I see is the possible integration with an Outlook type signature for changing business cards, Linkin profiles, etc, etc. This would be great during a meeting where typically we all get up and pass out our cards. Now we just meet online and receive the profile via subscribing to the Wave. Now that is not to dismiss the importance that the Facebook crowd will see in this neat little gadget. I just always jump to business applications.

The hangman and floodit gadgets are games and are fun. I am quite sure that Wave has the ability to take the online gaming platform to dizzying levels, but like Wave itself that is very much at a modest stage of development.

The Wave Client application is for those of you who were building a wave server. What you quickly realize is there is no web server application to go with it. Instead Google provides this client that allows some integration. The Wave Client application that waveDOTto built is a little nice and has a few more features. They describe it as such:

This project was an experiment to see if it was possible to build a GUI client. I took the reference server and client and began to decode the reference command line client. After decoding the client the next step was to create an API that could interface between the client-server communication system that Google provides and a user interface. The end result is an API which has been very well documented and a very simple user interface which provides all of the functionality that the command line one does.

This desktop client is only compatible with the reference server and not the sandbox one. Google is yet to finalize the client server communication model so in respect to all the possible changes development of the server has stopped for the time being. You are still able to download it and have a play about with it though! Editing, improving, modifying the client should be easy as the API and client are very well documented and the API abstracts the underlying complexity of communication with the Google Wave server.

They have a few images on their site so that you can see what it looks like. Also, I think they have update to this application as the reference server keeps updating itself.

So there you have our first Developer Spotlight. Quite an impressive list for the short time that Wave development has been available. Great job to waveDOTto. Keep up the good work and we hope to hear more and more from you in our forums as you continue your development efforts.

So, who will be the next developer to be in the spotlight. Well if you want it to be you, you need to get into our forums and start sharing with other developers. The aim is to provide the greatest experience to developers that is possible by having active forums and giving them some “kudos” for their great efforts.

KUDOS to waveDOTto.

The other day I wrote a blog titled “5 Things Wrong with Google Wave“. Now this blog wasn’t so much what was wrong with Google Wave, but rather it was about 5 things that Google needed to address before Google Wave is officially released. One of those “things” that needed to be addressed was the capability to collaborate on MS Office produced documents, given that 92% of businesses use MS Office and only 3.3 % use Google Docs (BTW, this post is being written on Google Docs). This post, coincidently, coincided with a recent new release from NetDocuments stating they were working on “developing an integration with Google Wave to simplify document collaboration and extend the NetDocuments collaborative reach to more people.”

So, I decided to contact NetDocuments and see if I could get a little more information on their integration effort with Google Wave and, also, find out a little more about the NetDocments product. More importanly, I wanted to know if this was a possible solution to the problem I posed. I spoke with Leonard Johnson the VP of Marketing for NetDocuments, who was great and answered a lot of questions and provided a lot of background information. Leonard was quick to add at the end of our conversation that anybody reading this post should feel free to contact him for further information, either by e-mail info@netdocuments.com or call +1.866.netdocs.

NetDocuments began in 1998 with a product they called Net Envelope which offered web-based document collaboration. This product has evolved to what is now know as Net Binder. What Net Binder provides today is a secure environment for businesses to collaborate on documents. Most importantly, MS Office documents including Outlook. As a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) content manger NetDocuments gives businesses the ability to collaborate on e-mails and documents securely. Leonard mentioned that this type of service is in great demand by many business, particularly the legal profession, which has a great deal of confidential or sensitive documents that they need to collaborate on together or send e-mails on a subject. I would assume that this type of service would be attractive to many businesses besides just the legal profession, but they certainly serve as a good example and one could think of many others (journalists, doctors, agents, etc, etc).

So back to Google Wave. NetDocuments attended Developer I/O 09 and held meetings with Google developers on how they could implement Google Wave into the NetDocuments product. What they envision being available is:

• Ability to create a wave within NetDocuments and display it as a separate object in a folder. It can also be embedded as an iFrame within a NetDocuments Project/Client-Centric Workspace allowing the wave contents to be visible when viewing the entire workspace.

• Ability to have NetDocuments folders, documents and search results displayed within a wave.

• Drag and drop documents from an internal NetDocuments folder to a wave, and vice versa.

• Login to the collaborative space using an methods that Google supports.

• Leverage the real-time wave collaborative features when it’s released to the market

The following are a few very early screenshots of the product:

NetDocuments released the news of an integration development path with Google at the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) 09. Normally, Leonard said the Law firms are slower at adopting new technology as they have very specific needs and are reluctant to change a working infrastructure. However, they were very impressed with the promise of a Google Wave integration and expressed real interest in the released solution.

Leonard said that he hoped that NetDocuments would be in the Google Wave sandbox by the end of this year. NetDocuments are waiting for a more stable version of the Wave to be released by Google before they can really do much more. They expect that more stable version by the end of September. The big issue that they have outstanding and need resolved is the authentication rights and whether they can re-authenticate.

In my mind this a great news for Google. This potentially solves a part of the problem they have of offering a MS Office solution to business. As I mentioned in “5 Things Wrong with Google Wave“, business will not like the idea that they now have to adopt Google Docs in order to use Google Wave. This provides one alternative, I think Google still needs to find a solution that is not web-based but this alternative I think will be wildly popular and could drive NetDocuments to create there own “NetDocuments server” that could be hosted by businesses and allow them to take provided an Intranet (NetDocuments + Google Wave) solution (purely speculation and conjecture on my part and not in NetDocuments plans that I know of).

I will be keeping a close eye on how this development progresses and really look forward to playing in the sandbox with a NetDocuments robot.

I would like to thank Leonard Johnson and NetDocuments for the great support they provided by finding time to do the interview and providing the great photos and background info.

Google announced on Tuesday (1 Sep 09) that it will be opening up Google Wave to select Google Apps Business Users and Education Users.

Google has a few versions to the Google Apps line. It has a Premier and Standard Edition for Businesses and also has a version for Schools, Governments, Non-profits and ISPs. Although the article below does not say specifically I would assume that they will open this up for those using the Premier Business Edition and select Schools that have a significant volume of collaboration. They are careful to let everyone know that this will not be a Google Apps wide rollout. Here is a snippet of the blog release:

Today we’re pleased to announce that we’ll be opening up access to Google Wave for some schools and businesses as part of the preview this fall. And while we won’t be able to open it up to all Google Apps users just yet, we hope to bring Google Wave to all Google Apps users next year.

You can read the entire blog article at the Official Google Enterprise Blog. They don’t make it clear, however, if Google Wave will be available on Sept. 30th (when they plan to allow another 100,000 sandbox users), or if it will be at a later time. They only say this fall, which is anywhere from 21 Sep – 20 Dec. I have a feeling that it will be later than the 30th Sept timeframe or else they would have just announced that it will coincide with that event.

They do mention that if you are a Google Apps Administrator (i.e. have a Google Apps account) you can sign up for updates and your chance to get a Google Wave account next year when they hope to open it up to all Google Apps users.

It is obvious from this announcement that Google will be targeting the collaboration promise that Google Wave brings to business. In my mind, it means that they should have a Google Apps collaboration solution ready for developer or beta testing by the fall. They will then use those businesses and schools they have given access as de-buggers.

This is a good step forward towards business collaboration, but they still need to find a solution to collaboration using MS Office on the Wave as I mentioned in a previous post: 5 Things Wrong with Google Wave.

The plugin that was created for Google Wave allows you to embed a wave, as an article, into your website. You can go to the Joomla Content Plugin demo-site and get both information on using the plugin and see a demo of the plugin in action. Of course you will need a sandbox account to see the wave embedded.

One of the very obvious examples of this embed in Joomla would be to act as an alternative comments solution. However, I think there are more insightful and clever ways that this could be better used. Leave a comment with your idea.

You send them the content you want in the blog via e-mail. You can attach what you want: photos, videos, mp3′s etc. The Posterous engine then goes and creates a blog page for you with your e-mail that you send as the current blog entry. You can then adjust settings, look etc as you wish.

The Posterous robot for Google Wave allows you to simply add the Posterous domain address to your wave. Create your post. Click done and it goes off to Posterous and creates your blog page and entry.

The Posterous webpage describes it as such:

What is Posterous-Robot?

Posterous-Robot is first a Google Wave robot. It is built by lookon with Google Wave Python Library and Posterous API. The posterous bot helps you to post blog to posterous.com in Google Wave.

How to use Posterous-Robot

It’s easy to use Poterous-Robot in Google Wave. You just need to add posterous-robot@appspot to your contact and start a new wave with the robot. After logining to Posterous, you can post blog to Posterous by editing the title and body of the foot wavelet.

A detailed guide: How to write a blog using Google Wave Robot for Posterous.

The how to guide comes complete with photos and shows just how simple using this robot is.

You can get the source code for the robot here.

Not so much by what it does, but the promise of what these types of robots could do.

Igor as explained on the Igor Google Source Code page is:

A proof of concept Google Wave robot that helps people manage the process of adding references to an academic article.

The minimum you’ll need to do to get started is to edit the appengine-web.xml file and put your own app engine application name inside the “application” element.

Note that I’m not normally a Java developer and this really is just a proof of concept. The code lacks tests and is poorly organized.

OTOH sometimes things that seem messy and complicated are that way for a reason. Usually the reason is that Google Wave is still a developer preview and bits of the Java API don’t work yet or need changing (notably getting the IDs of newly created blips and communicating with gadgets).

The debugging log is turned on in the code. I recommend that you look at what’s actually being passed between the Wave server and App Engine in the wire protocol JSON – right now it’s the best way to work out what is and isn’t supported by the Wave API! If it isn’t in the JSON you can’t access it in the robot.

Functions that use regular expressions to modify the text are the most obviously overly complicated pieces of code – patterns have to be matched one at a time because otherwise the String that you’re finding matches on and the internal representation of the contents of the Wave (the TextView) get out of sync.

Below a video of Igor in action (very impressive):

Igor is currently configured to grab references from PubMed, Connotea and CiteUlike. Click on there links to learn more about them.

What is great about this Robot is the way it really does highlight the power that Google Wave Robots could harness. Putting together any kind of technical or research paper just got so much easier.

Imagine being linked to a chemistry reference robot that gives you C2H6O when you type in the word ethanol. Or a quotation robot that gives you “To be or note to be” when you type in “quote hamlet suicide”, etc, etc. The list goes on and on. Basically Google Wave robots could give you very exact information to choose from based on very vague information. Thus, not only free up more time via collaboration but it also shows promise in its ability to drastically cut down on research time.

I’m sure that you can think of many other applications for these types of robots, please share below in comments.

Firstly, the chief question I receive both via email and Twitter is “How do I get a Google Wave Account?” The second most asked question is “How long do I have to wait?”

Let’s start with – How you get a Google Wave Account:

Don’t ask for an account anywhere else but with the links below. You won’t get one!

Instead, if you’re a developer, fill out the form at
https://services.google.com/fb/forms/wavesignupfordev/.

Or, if you’re not a developer, fill out the form at
https://services.google.com/fb/forms/wavesignup/.

These are the only ways to get an account. Tweeting “Can anybody get me an account?” is just spam.

Also, some folks have had trouble when they sign up when they get there invite. Make sure you see the proper confirmation page after you fill out the form. If you see the same form again, fill it out again, pasting in the email address used for registration and the code embedded in your invitation link at the bootom of the page (you may have to scroll down to see it). Just make sure you get that confirmation page before you leave!

While your waiting for you invite (which could take a few week) you may want to try out PyGo Wave Server. The following about the PyGo Wave server comes directly from the Google Wave Code page.

PyGoWave Server – The Headstart

I couldn’t wait until the guys at Google released their reference server implementation, so I decided to build my own in the meantime.

This implementation uses Django – a well-known python web framework – as its backend and is in a very early stage. Just as Google, I want to release it to the public as fast as possible.

In the end, this will eventually be a full-featured server implementation for easy use, extention and integration with your web servers and applications.

Note: All of the code is directly derived from Google’s published Wave API and protocol specification

You can (should before signing up, so you know what to expect) read their Architecutral Thoughts about the server here. But this is a great development. The Google Architecture Team has always stated that Google Wave success is based on and requires independent Wave servers. Having this so fast out of the gate is a great development. See the YouTube video below.

I signed up at the PyGo Wave Test Server and had quite an enjoyable experience playing with it. Not to mention, the time from sign up to playing with PyGo Wave took approximately 5 mins. All of the gadgets currently used in Google Wave are available to play with. It really is worth trying out while your waiting. You definetly get the Wave experience and you get to play with the Gadgets.

UPDATE: 2009-09-05

The PyGo Wave Server has been updated here is there updated Blog post (actually dated 2009-09-02, I’m a little behind) titled:

New and Improved

Ok here we go, since yesterday our latest “major” release is live, which is Version 0.3. I think p2k managed to implement all those features we descriped in our Roadmap .

The coolest new thing is definitely collaborative editing within waves. It’s now possible to write stuff within a wave and edit it collaborative with your fellow wavers.

And we did some improvements under the hood. As you can see we changed our URL to http://www.pygowave.net , you will be redirected to it, and all this stuff is now hosted on a seperated v-server just for pygowave itself. So only pygowave is going down if something breaks and not our whole server.

Furthermore PyGoWave is under https://www.pygowave.net available with SSL encryption. The SSL certificate itself was created by us and is not trusted, due to the fact that we do not have the money to buy a trusted one. Nevertheless its better than nothing =)

And last but not least we are now on ohloh, which is kind of an Socialnetwork for Programmers and OpenSourceSoftware. You can get to our project page here. Feel free to add us to your “I use this” list.

Keep up the great work guys! Visit the PyGo Blog Page and subscribe to their RSS to make sure you get the latest updates.

For those that haven’t have a look below.

Unfortunately this latest release of Google Wave does not work on mobile platforms. In the video they can get to the home page but when they try to open a wave it crashes.

However, you do get an idea for what is to come and the attractive layout of the site on the mobile. It is worth taking a look. Enjoy!
