I have now given two presentations on Google Wave to widely differing industry sectors. In both cases the question that folks around the table got most excited about was “Does this work with Google Voice?” Business sees immediately what that means. These folks were upper management visionaries who very quickly cut to the chase of what is extremely beneficial (cost cutting big time) and what is just a neat or fancy tool. So, what was it that they saw with this holy marriage of Google Wave and Google Voice? I will explain.
First, let me say that in both cases the industry I briefed immediately saw the great collaboration promise that this tool could bring to their industry. Everybody jumped to specific examples of “Use Cases” in their business where this would be an extremely beneficial collaborative tool. Typically, these examples all revolved around documents that required one set of eyes to sign off and/or add a specific piece to the document, then another person, then another, etc. Google Wave offered one view to everybody that cut that time down by “n” times (where “n” is the number of personnel that is needed to added piece to the document or sign off on it).
Second, there seemed to always be the Google Voice guy/girl in the meeting that was using Google Voice and loved it. (Note: Google Voice is not officially released here in Canada yet. But, of course, there are “work-a-round’s” and you don’t have to search [wink] to far to find what they are.) This inevitably led to the “Google Voice will be a great business tool and can’t wait to get it” discussion.
What this led into was then a discussion about what it would mean if Google Wave + Google Voice were integrated together. These were there top “a-ha’s” from that discussion:
1. Imagine the money we could save on conference and video-conference calls;
2. Imagine the great collaborative meetings we could have. Real-time collaboration, not the “Go-to-Meeting” or “Web-Ex” style today with one controller;
3. Imagine a Wave with a document we are all collaborating on, a Wave with Google Voice and Wave with a video embed of each participants web-cam: awesome collaborative meeting, (Just like we were all in the same room);
4. Imagine how much work we could do from home, on the road, or anywhere with this type of real-time integration available all the time via Wave;
5. Imagine the overhead cost savings if we didn’t need big office buildings, phone lines, conference lines, etc.
6. Imagine the efficiency savings.
Imagine, imagine, imagine! Next step…build them the robots that does the collaboration required for their specific collaboration “Use Cases”.
The Holy Grail!
