Google announced on Tuesday (1 Sep 09) that it will be opening up Google Wave to select Google Apps Business Users and Education Users.
Google has a few versions to the Google Apps line. It has a Premier and Standard Edition for Businesses and also has a version for Schools, Governments, Non-profits and ISPs. Although the article below does not say specifically I would assume that they will open this up for those using the Premier Business Edition and select Schools that have a significant volume of collaboration. They are careful to let everyone know that this will not be a Google Apps wide rollout. Here is a snippet of the blog release:
Today we’re pleased to announce that we’ll be opening up access to Google Wave for some schools and businesses as part of the preview this fall. And while we won’t be able to open it up to all Google Apps users just yet, we hope to bring Google Wave to all Google Apps users next year.
You can read the entire blog article at the Official Google Enterprise Blog. They don’t make it clear, however, if Google Wave will be available on Sept. 30th (when they plan to allow another 100,000 sandbox users), or if it will be at a later time. They only say this fall, which is anywhere from 21 Sep – 20 Dec. I have a feeling that it will be later than the 30th Sept timeframe or else they would have just announced that it will coincide with that event.
They do mention that if you are a Google Apps Administrator (i.e. have a Google Apps account) you can sign up for updates and your chance to get a Google Wave account next year when they hope to open it up to all Google Apps users.
It is obvious from this announcement that Google will be targeting the collaboration promise that Google Wave brings to business. In my mind, it means that they should have a Google Apps collaboration solution ready for developer or beta testing by the fall. They will then use those businesses and schools they have given access as de-buggers.
This is a good step forward towards business collaboration, but they still need to find a solution to collaboration using MS Office on the Wave as I mentioned in a previous post: 5 Things Wrong with Google Wave.
