AR, incidentally, stands for Augmented Reality. I then found this video that shows AR Wave in action, check it out:

Trish adds the following in her presentation:

The main advantages of using a OT system like Wave for games is twofold;

1. For making simple games it takes far less investment as all that is required is basicbot-coding. You dont even have to run your own server if you dont want, provided theres a Bot-supporting server or something like Google App Engine you can use for your game code.

Wave takes care of accounts, transfer of information and the propagation of changes over the restof the infrastructure.

2. If you want to make a more advanced game (something like WoW or Secondlife), theres still some big advantages to using Wave. You can build your own custom-server to handle complex game events and actions, but by conforming tothe WFP standard for serverserver interaction, you allow anyone to both view or join your game with little to noeffort required. When users can just view or try your game with a single click, you stand a lot more chance of getting them hooked on it. Having to signup, login, and potentially download a client is often far too much effort for people that just want to try something quickly.

With OT you can even create multiple servers worldwide with a persistent and constantly synching world between them…all with no extra effort on your part. This means a faster experience for the end user, while still having a consistent game world for the user. (No need for separate worlds for the user to login too due to server load restrictions)You could even make your game support user generated content, or overlap with other game worlds…if you wish.

This is just a handful of advantages really (more that Markus suggested)

OT is what makes multiuser (or multiplayer) interaction possible. In Networked games you have a scene graph that is kept in sync between the clients by sending changes of its nodes states between the clients (or between the clients a a centralized server).

In Wave OT does this for the nodes of an XML document (aka a wave). The catch is that requirements for document editing and requirements for game scene graphs are somewhat different. For example regarding real time requirements vs. correctness.e.g, the way Googles OT implementation works, a client cannot send out a new change before the last change has been acknowledged. This is because OT has to guarantee consistency which isnt that important in a gaming scenario.

Also of course the scene graph example is rather simplified. Modern network games are a lot more sophisticated than that But the scope of Wave is much broader that game design, so a specialized AR Game Engine will most likely be able to offer more in terms of performance and possible gaming scenarios.

You can visit the ARWave.org site to find out more or to contact Trish with any questions you may have.

As always, please leave your comments and thoughts regarding the efforts of ARWave below. We love to hear what you think.

Coding. This is my number one use case for Google Wave right now. You have got to try it. You do not need to be ocean’s apart, in fact…being in the same room right next to each other works best. Try it…you will agree with me that this is the number one…by far…best use case of Google Wave right now! Also, there are some pretty good extensions out there you might want to try. Take at look at the extension list if you want to try one or two.

Well…., now there is a really, really great extension out there…brought to you by the folks at wave-vs.net…..check it out:

I can’t tell you how happy I was to find this site. Funny enough it just showed up on my site here on Friday as a Google Ad. I clicked on it and was amazed. I find it very interesting that Google is not extoiling all about these guys on their own blogs. Also, I found it funny that the story of the day on Friday was all about how cool it would be to imbed a Wave as an iFrame! Are you kidding me! There was also some other lame post going around about live blogging with Wave that made a lot of noise on Twitter. Useless! Stupid! I really am getting very disheartened with how this being marketed and how that marketing is seemingly embraced by Google. Really missing the big boat guys!

Regardless…I definitely digress! wave-vs.net is a great leap in Google Wave extensions. These guys have taken the one thing that this technology is really, really useful for…right now…and made a excellent product that they can take to market. Yes, take to market. wave-vs.net is not free. In fact, price list ranges for $65 to $1100 EUR depending on your package. That, in my business mind, is the best news to hit Google Wave since Google I/O 09….somebody is going to make profit of this product and develop serious extensions that are very useful and will be a game-changer for those that will use it for development.

For that alone I am naming the wave-vs.net folks as our April Developer Spotlight. Congratulations guys (and girls) you have truly made a great product that will be heartly embraced by any developers who give it a try. Here is a little bit more about Wave-vs.net that I took from there website:

wave-vs.net is a Plugin to enable Pair Programming built-in Support on Core Editors and Designers in Visual Studio.Net 2008 and 2010.

Using wave-vs.net you can share Project Items and Develop together in Real-Time.

wave-vs.net Current version supports Remote Pairing for main Visual Studio Code Editors and Designers, we continue working to extend wave-vs.net capabilities.

If you are interested to know what Project Items/File Formats are enabled for Remote Pair Programming using wave-vs.net take a look on Visual Studio Integration information.

wave-vs.net does not only implements Pair Programming features. To make Pair Programming experience in Visual Studio.Net

Wave Enabled – Pair Programming – Collaborative Development

Major Source Control Systems Integration

Completely Integrated in Visual Studio.Net

Do you want to see a Complete summary Feature List? go to Full Feature List.

For those of you that can’t wait to rush over to wave-vs.net and use this, please come on back and leave a comment regarding your experience with the extension. Also, feel free to leave a comment on my earlier rant if you wish.

As a disclaimer I am in no way getting any type of financial commission or royalty from this product (other then it randomly showing up as a Google Ad). I stand to gain nothing whatsoever from the developers. I am just very keen on what they are offering as I see it as truly making Google Wave better for all.

But, you would be wrong. Yes, the very first Developer Spotlight that we did back in September 09 highlighted the folks at Wave.TO. The fact is, they have earned the honour once again…and in a big way.

First, I just want to say that there was a lot of developers to choose from this month. My sentimental favourite was the MindWave gadget because it works with a 3rd party application that I use on my laptop seamlessly and that, for me ,is a huge, huge step in the right direction for Google Wave extensions. Plus, Mashable has a big developer contest going on, so some really excellent extensions are being released for the competition.

I don’t know if the Wave.TO folks are entering or have entered the contest. But, if they haven’t, they should. Because in my mind they have the hands down winner!

The Robot that I want to bring to your attention is called Mr. Ray. Below is a video describing the problem Mr. Ray is trying to solve, the Wave.TO description of the robot and a video of Mr. Ray in action:

Mr-Ray provides a way to include non Google Wave users in a Wave. When a Wave changes an e-mail is dispatched to all e-mail participants with a link. When they follow this link they can view the Wave and interact with it. It’s almost as good as having a Wave account! To get stuck in use the extension installer and select “New Wave with e-mail participants” from the New Wave menu or add mr-ray@appspot.com. To give Mr-Ray a go you can use the sample wave or if you’re not sure what to do and want to see it in action watch the following video…

So you have to agree these folks have done a great job at designing something that the whole Google Corp couldn’t do (or at least, haven’t done up to this point). Integrate Google Wave with Email (GMail). Now perhaps Google is working on something much more elegant. We have to wait and see. Perhaps they will just buy the Wave.TO folks…that would be a good start if they are not working on something else.

Regardless, this excellent work by Wave.TO earns them the March Developer Spotlight honours, and this month that has a little extra meaning, as the competition is extremely stiff. Great job by the great developers over at Wave.TO. Keep up the good work….even if you become the next Google purchase (they are kind of in that mode lately).

Have you been using Mr. Ray? Let us know how it worked for you. Leave a comment below. Also, visit the folks at Wave.TO and leave a comment on their site and show your support for their great efforts.

Last night they announced the Google Apps Marketplace. Which they describe as:

The Google Apps Marketplace makes it easy for more than 2 million Google Apps customers to discover, purchase and deploy integrated business applications and related professional services. By integrating with user account and application data stored in Google Apps, these cloud applications provide a simpler user experience, increase business efficiency, and reduce administrative overhead.

The Google Apps Marketplace supports open standards to provide deep integrations with Google Apps: OpenID for sign-in and identification, OAuth for authorization, and Atom-based Google Data feeds for interaction with user data and domain settings.

The Google Apps Marketplace makes it easy for ISVs to sell integrated apps to a rapidly growing Google Apps customer base of 20 million users from 2 million businesses and universities. You can develop integrations with Google Apps using simple & reusable open standards such as OpenID and OAuth, and have freedom of choice for both billing arrangement and hosting platform.

More than 50 vendors joined us for this launch, including Appirio, Atlassian, Intuit, and Manymoon, who demoed their integrated apps at the campfire. To get started on your own integrated app, visit developer.googleapps.com.

This is very exciting news for Google Apps. It will certainly be a feature that is a clear differentiator between itself and other Office Apps products suites. Moreover, it certainly gives cloud computing an added punch. Rather than just doing the same stuff in the cloud, you can now sell the cloud as the way to do much, much more.

However, I was a little disappointed not to hear any news regarding Wave. I was so hoping that they had something. I guess I will still have to wait for I/O 10.

Did you watch the Campfire One live presentation? What do you think about the App Marketplace? Leave your thoughts below, we love to hear your comments.

On code.google.com, there is a special area called Google Code University. This area lists resources for educators on web technology and software development.

As of Friday, 5 Mar 10, it also lists resources on teaching Google APIs & tools, like codelabs and workshops: http://code.google.com/edu/googledev/index.html

If you have not been to the Google Code university before, the below is a synopsis of what it offers:

The website provides tutorials and sample course content so Computer Science students and educators can learn more about current computing technologies and paradigms. In particular, this content is Creative Commons licensed which makes it easy for CS educators to use in their own classes.

The Courses section contains tutorials, lecture slides, and problem sets for a variety of topic areas:

AJAX Programming

Algorithms

Distributed Systems

Web Security

Languages

In the Tools 101 section, you will find a set of introductions to some common tools used in Computer Science such as version control systems and databases.

The CS Curriculum Search will help you find teaching materials that have been published to the web by faculty from CS departments around the world. You can refine your search to display just lectures, assignments or reference materials for a set of courses.

One of the offerings I found under the API presentations was the Robots v2 presentation done by Pamela Fox. This Prezi shows how the Robots API works inside Wave, and shows the new features of the Robots API v2.

Google Wave Robots v2 on Prezi

Some of the other resources available were:

Besides those developer-targeted resources, there are some resources made entirely with teaching in mind, and these are listed below:

Hackathon in a Box
Contains tips for holding hackathons, and material for App Engine, Geo APIs, Google Chrome, and HTML 5 hackathons.

WebDevEdu
Contains material for teaching client-side & server-side web programming, using Google API labs as the teaching aids.

Geo APIs codelabs
Contains 9 codelabs on working the Google Geo APIs – KML, Google Earth, and the Maps APIs.

Picasa PHP workshop
Provides step by step instructions to create your first mashup using Picasa, Google Data APIs and Google Maps.

YouTube Data API via JSON: embedding videos in your site
Shows how to pull information about YouTube videos onto a website using JavaScript and the JSON format.

So make sure you visit the site. If you need some Google educational resources or if you are planning on doing a Google workshop or hack-a-thon you will find this information invaluable. The Google Code University is a great resource http://code.google.com/edu/googledev/index.html, make sure you visit.

Have you used this information before? Do you plan on using it in the future? Let us know about your experience at the Google Code University.

I am a big, big fan of the ConceptDraw suite of apps. I was sooooooo happy to hear that they have developed a MindMap robot for Google Wave called MindWave!

I immediately visited the Sample Wave and installed the robot. I am currently collaborating on Google Wave with a work project and was really excited to start using the MindWave robot right away to help us map out our thoughts. The great thing about this is that all us working on this project have the ConceptDraw suite of apps and will be able to download the finished map and use it as we need too. I understand many folks do not have this suite, or even just the MindMap app, but if you do, you can understand the title of this post. Because many, many gadgets and robots made for Google Wave at this time are really working prototypes, or have been developed during a hack-a-thon or by somebody just fooling around. It is so nice to get something that can be used immediately professionally.

However, this robot does still need some work. Regardless, it is one of the best robots I have worked with…because I can use what I work on outside of Google Wave seamlessly. This is just a tease of how great Google Wave will be with integration with Google Apps.

Ok…., enough about all that. Let’s introduce the MindWave:

They explain the MindWave as follows:

To get started with a mapping session create new wave via “New Wave” button in the middle pane, then in the right-hand panel, on the first line type the main topic name of your map. Then click on the green light bulb icon. A mind map will be inserted into the frame.

Now you can invite others to collaborate with you, by using the plus sign at the top of the wave. As people type content into the map their name will appear in the area they are typing. Once they hit “Enter” the contents of what they typed will immediately appear.

The playback function built into Google Wave is an excellent tool to see how a map was sequentially constructed and who added what content. This is a great way for new participants to your map to familiarize themselves with the content.

Maps built by using ConceptDraw MindWave may be downloaded to desktop ConceptDraw MINDMAP for Mac OS X or Windows, where it can be further developed and used.

Helpful Tips

Your opinion will be valuable for us.

My hat really goes off to the folks over at ConceptDraw. If they continue to develop excellent robots for Google Wave I will be the happiest guy around! Their developer, Danil Somsikov, is my new best friend. He is already talking about developing something for their Project Management app. Fantastic! Please, please, please keep up this great work! You’re a rockstar!

Have you tried this robot out yet? Please leave your thoughts below, we love to hear what you think.

Our February Developer Spotlight shines on Vicente J. Ruiz Jurado who has been working on a couple of projects for Google Wave:

Troco, and

Karma

Both of these extensions have a social overtone to them and are quite ingenious and certainly not what you normally see being done by developers.

Let’s first look at Troco (which I could only access on the Google Wave Developer Sandbox and not the “September 09″ released Google Wave Preview):

Vicente explains that Troco means barter in Interlingua and in Português. Also, troc means barter in French and Català. He explains that Troco is:

An experimental peer-to-peer currency system. Troco is a set of wave extensions that aims to provide a decentralized complementary community currency system, i.e., a peer-to-peer currency system. You can also view it as an IOU or promissory note based system. At the current point, troco consists only in an experimental (unfinished and insecure) Wave gadget with a toolbar installer. For more info visit:http://troco.ourproject.org

Vicente also offers, a quote from Complementary Currencies in Japan Today, 2004 to help explain why this extension will become useful:

«Japan isn’t dealing with a “Japanese crisis” as is typically described in the Western media, but rather with a structural world crisis that chronologically happens to have first hit Japan.(…) We can expect the US to follow a similar path of denial particularly in an election year, repeating the mantra that the Japanese have heard for fourteen years: “next year, the economy will be back to normal.” It is under this light that what is going on in Japan in the domain of complementary currencies is relevant for the rest of the world. The second largest economy of the world has turned itself into a real-life laboratory for resolving a variety of economic and social problems from the bottom up, thanks to monetary innovations. Can the rest of the world afford not to learn from those experiments?»

Thus, Troco is heavily inspired in the japanese WAT and i-WAT Systems.

Given the Global economic crisis Troco’s time may indeed have arrivied. But first Vicente has some work to still do on the extension to get it working properly:

A brief of things to work on / study:

Make the gadget more robust

Improve the use of FireGPG (advanced users)

Study the implementation of debt circulation

Study the evolution of wave and how can this improve this project

We wish him good luck! I for one certainly hope he gets both this extension and the underlying idea surrounding Troco into the mainstream. It is more than time for new ideas when it comes to our barter system (or….is that what got is into this problem in the first place).

Next is Karma. Vicente describes Karma as:

Karma adds a simple rating Gadget to Waves, allowing participants of a Wave to rate each other. It also allows the expulsion and prohibition of users that have a low Karma from the Wave.i.e. if a user has been rated repeatedly with a low Karma and tries to enter a Wave with the checkbox “Kick out low-Karma participants” activated, the user will not be allowed to enter the Wave. Note: The kickout function is implemented, but will not work until remove_participant operation is in the API.

If you want to see Karma in action check out the demo Wave, which is available in the Google Wave Preview Edition.

Vicente goes on to add:

In the background, the overall Karma of Wave users is calculated using the Trust Metric algorithm from www.advogato.org.

If you want to use Karma, just add karma-bot@appspot.com to a Wave, and rate other participants. The more participants rate each other, the more accurate the global rate calculation becomes.

Short-term

Improve interface to be able to support Waves with a lot of participants.

Add a button to remove a rating.

Middle/Long term

Study, choose and integrate a distributed reputation algorithm instead of the centralized algorithm.

Again, another great extension that is very interesting in terms of applying meaning to your social Karma rating. Not sure how popular that would be, but I certainly think that some of the underlying technology and thinking regarding the Karma extension could have some applicability in Black-Listing undesirable users who are intent on malicious actions. See the Google Wave User Black List post for more on that subject.

So hats off to Vicente! You are doing great work and I hope you continue to develop for Google Wave. Your work is both original and meaningful! Congradulations on being choosen for our February Developer Spotlight.

Please share your thoughts and encouragement for Vicente by leaving a comment below. We love to hear from you and your thoughts on this any post. What do you think of Vicente’s extension? Pretty cool, eh?

It was great news to hear last Wednesday that they are bringing Google Wave integration to their customers, see the press release:

Starting on February 3, you’ll be able to boost your project management productivity in Wrike by adding Google Wave collaboration feature set to your project management tool. Wrike is the first project management software that allows you to manage your projects directly from Google’s communication platform.

Wrike’s Google Wave integration will allow you to seamlessly turn your waves into tasks, set due dates, update your project schedule and add your Wave discussions as comments to tasks in Wrike! This instant collaboration combination is a breakthrough in the project management space and an outstanding achievement in team productivity.

This will be a great addition to the very limited Project Management tools that was available to Google Wave users.

They offer a number of tutorials for their users: (I’ll show a couple here, but click on the links to see the others)

A. Connect your accounts:

To connect your Google Wave account to your Wrike account, please follow these three simple steps

Add a new contact, wrike-wave@appspot.com, to your Wave.

Then create a new wave and add Wrike to it.

This new wave will be your Wrike task. Immediately, Wrike will respond with a request to connect your Google Wave account to your Wrike account. (That will appear in a separate wave). Once you follow this link, Wrike will recognize you and create your task in your workspace. The next time you want create a task in Wrike from your Wave account simply add Wrike to a new wave.

B. Turn a wave into a task

If you have a wave that you want to become a task in your project, you can easily add it to your Wrike workspace. To create a task in Wrike from your Google Wave account, add Wrike to your wave. The title of your wave 1 will be your Wrike task title. The message that you added when you created your wave 2 will be added to the task description in Wrike.

If you want to update your task title or description, just use the “Edit this message” feature in Google Wave. All the updates will be automatically transferred to the task in Wrike.

Note: Due to the Google Wave API limitation, our system can only sync changes made to your tasks in the Wave, and it will not translate the updates you made to the task in your Wrike workspace to Google’s platform. So if you create a task from the Wave, make changes to the task description in Wrike, and then try to update the main wave content from Google’s platform, the changes that you made in Wrike will be lost. As soon as the limitation is eliminated by Google, this restriction will be removed.

C. Set the due date

D. Share a wave in Wrike

The Wrike.com team also draws attention to the following for it’s users.

Note: At the moment, Google Wave API has a number of limitations that restrict Wrike’s integration functionalities. Hardworking Google developers promise to get rid of these limitations soon.

This is a great development. I hope, and fully expect to hear of more of these types of announcements. Still waiting to hear from NetDocuments who should be getting ready to announce something sometime soon. I suspect that for many developers these limitations, alluded too above, may be the reason we haven’t heard more of these types of announcements regarding integration.

How excited are you to hear about this integration? Are you a Wrike.com user? Will you become one because of this announcement?

Daniel has been developing for since it has been released and his latest gadgets have been some of his best work yet. Those of you that are regulars to this blog will recognize Daniel as a frequent contributor here. However, it is only his great work as a developer that has earned him the Developer Spotlight, lets take a look.

There is the Strategy Planning Tool Gadget, described as:

When you are working on designing your business or a product launch, it requires the use of some of the strategic tools. It can be the SWOT, PEST or PESTEL or the BCG growth matrix. Normally work on those tools is done in a room and on a whiteboard. The whiteboard is a really great way to work and it can make people work together and create a lot of interesting content. It though has some challenges for teams that are not sitting together or are difficult to get in the same room.

There is also the Scrum Task Board gadget:

We have produced a new Taskboard gadget, created in flex where there is spend some more time on the interface to make it look wave-y. The gadget lets you assign users to tasks and view which tasks are unassigned.

Next is the the WordPress publishing robot:

The robot works by adding the robot wp-bot@appspot.com to your wave. First time you add the robot it complains that you need to give credentials for a WordPress blog. Next time you add the robot to a wave, it will publish the blog to your own site with out any hassle. Remember to have the plugin Wavr installed on your blog.

,

On the Mastering Wave site Daniel offers a lot of information to help out developers for . Daniel is truly a very enthusiastic Google Waver and has been offering excellent advice, reviews and extensions to help and support the community.

Go check out Mastering Wave and offer Daniel your support and appreciation for his great efforts developing for .
